QUICK ANSWER

Backrooms has the smallest palette — four yellow-cream families — so color matching is trivial and silhouette is everything. The measured lit-versus-shadowed ceiling values differ hugely: pick one lighting zone and stay in it.

Source basis: official Steam News for update facts; surface color values are community-measured (Steam guide, linked from our color codes library) — center-of-range starting points, not official data. Following our editorial policy, this page teaches surface strategy and does not invent “guaranteed hiding spots”.

Backrooms inverts the game’s usual difficulty. On every other map, getting the color right is half the work; here the measured palette is four closely related yellow-cream families, and any Hider can match them in seconds. Which means everyone’s paint is good — and Seekers stop looking at color entirely.

Map read

Monochrome yellow, bright, open sightlines. Paint takes ten seconds; surviving depends on outline, pose, and picking one lighting zone.

How to read this palette

  • The whole map lives in one hue family. Wall yellow (b6b35c/a89b45), carpet cream (e7e4b7), fluorescent tint (efe9b8) — these differ mainly in brightness, not color. Sampling any one of them gets you “close” everywhere, and close is exactly as good as everyone else’s paint.
  • The real data point is the ceiling pair. Lit ceiling measures d8d2b0; shadowed ceiling 5d562c. Same surface, roughly half the brightness. That is the map’s lesson in numbers: crossing a lighting boundary changes your correct value by ~50%, and a body painted for the lit zone standing in shadow is a beacon.

Hider approach

  1. Paint fast — broad wall value on everything, no detailing. Detail time is wasted on a patternless surface.
  2. Spend the saved prep time on pose and position: this map has few props, so your silhouette against long sightlines is the entire game. Corners, wall junctions, and whatever breaks the endless-hallway geometry are worth more than any color tweak.
  3. Commit to one lighting zone. If you must be near a boundary, be on the dark side of it — an overdark body reads as shadow; an overbright one reads as a person.

Seeker approach

Backrooms is the purest shape-scan in the game. Walk the sightlines and look for anything that interrupts the repeating wall-floor-ceiling rhythm: a bump on a flat wall, a vertical mass where the hallway should be empty, a shadow with no light source explaining it. Ignore color completely — on this map, color tells you nothing.
