Penguin Hotel is the pattern map: checkerboard floors measure four distinct values and the wallpapers repeat in two. Multi-color surfaces demand zone painting — or pick the plush penguins and solid furniture instead.
Last checked: 2026-07-17 Source basis: official Steam News for update facts; surface color values are community-measured (Steam guide, linked from our color codes library) — center-of-range starting points, not official data. Following our editorial policy, this page teaches surface strategy and does not invent “guaranteed hiding spots”.
Penguin Hotel has the second-largest measured palette (10 surface families) and the game’s hardest paint problem: multi-value patterns. A checkerboard floor is not one color — the measurements show four (a7bfbd, 254c6a, 848982, 211b22) — and imitating it means painting zones on your body that line up with the floor from the Seeker’s angle, not yours.
Pattern-dense interiors: diamond and striped wallpapers, four-value checkerboards, plus solid-color escape hatches (dark furniture, marble, plush penguins). Know which problem you are choosing.

- Patterns here are measured in pairs and quads. Royal blue wallpaper repeats two values (
2b4660/264551); guest-room stripes two (4f556e/1f3142); checkerboard four. Every extra value multiplies your prep time and your error surface. Only commit to a pattern if your prep-time budget is healthy. - The solid surfaces are the beginner lane. Dark wood furniture (
381f0e), black marble columns (0b0e0d), herringbone floor (5a4c44) — single values, dark, forgiving. A clean solid-color hide beats a rushed checkerboard every time. - The penguins are the map’s signature prop. Plush measures
060062/1c2a48(deep navy/denim) and ice whitebccede. Saturated navy is rare in interior maps, so a body painted penguin-blue only makes sense next to actual penguins — context is the camouflage.
Hider approach
- Budget first: pattern surfaces are high-reward, high-cost. If you sampled late or moved rooms, drop to the solid-color lane.
- If you paint a pattern, align it from the door’s angle — Seekers see your body against the surface from the entrance, and a checkerboard aligned to your own camera is misaligned to theirs.
- Use prop clusters (penguins, furniture groups): filling a gap in an existing cluster hides your outline far better than flattening against open wallpaper.
Seeker approach
Patterns are your ally: scan the repeats for interruptions. A damaged diamond, a checker that does not continue the grid, a stripe that bends — each is a body. Then audit the penguin clusters: count them, check for one facing the wrong way or one navy shape without the plush silhouette. Solid dark furniture zones need the brightness check — look for wood that reflects like skin-smooth paint instead of grain.
Latest map-specific update
Steam News update2.7.0 says random elements were added to Penguin Hotel. That makes fixed routes less reliable than the surface-family method above. Re-check furniture, prop clusters, and checkerboard sightlines at the start of each round instead of assuming a memorized layout still holds. See the updates timeline.
