QUICK ANSWER

Sewer is the darkest base map: almost every measured surface sits near black, so brightness and roughness mismatches expose you before hue does. Match the local value first, and never default to pure black.

Source basis: official Steam News for update facts; surface color values are community-measured (Steam guide, linked from our color codes library) — center-of-range starting points, not official data. Following our editorial policy, this page teaches surface strategy and does not invent “guaranteed hiding spots”.

Sewer looks like the easiest Hider map — it is dark everywhere, and dark hides mistakes, right? The measured palette says otherwise: because nearly every surface sits in a narrow, very dark range, the clues that remain are brightness and reflection, and those are exactly what beginners get wrong here.

Map read

The darkest palette in the game. Hue barely separates surfaces — value (brightness) and roughness do. A too-light or too-glossy body glows here.

How to read this palette

  • Nothing is actually black. Pavement is 2a1e14 (warm dark brown), water is 2f3a3a/3a4744 (desaturated blue-green), even “black” pipes measure 0e0908. Painting flat 000000 in a corner that is really dark brown is a classic Sewer death — the community paint guide’s true-black recipe (0/0/0 with max metallic and roughness) belongs in vents and true shadow boxes, not on brick.
  • The saturated accents are traps and tools. Oil drums (0e3716 green, 972711 red) and graffiti (971e0b, b37505) are the only loud colors on the map. They draw Seeker eyes — which makes the wall next to a drum quieter than the wall in the open.
  • Wet means glossy. Water zones and damp surfaces punish a matte body with the wrong reflection. On this map, check your roughness slider before your hue.

Hider approach

  1. Sample, never guess — in low light your color memory is at its worst, and the measured values above show how narrow the differences are.
  2. Match the local brightness zone: a value correct for the pavement is wrong two meters away under a light.
  3. Break your silhouette against pipe runs and brick seams; darkness alone does not erase a shoulder line against a lit background.

Seeker approach

Do not scan for color — scan for glow and gloss. Anything slightly lighter than its background, or reflecting light where brick should eat it, is your target. Sweep with the room’s light sources at your back so bodies rim-light against dark surfaces. The saturated drums and graffiti are natural waypoints for a methodical route.
